How to Send inReach Preset Messages

A simple workflow for sending Garmin inReach Mini 2 preset check-in messages during a hike.

Step 1

Turn on your inReach Mini 2.

Step 2

Make sure your inReach Mini 2 is already connected to your iPhone via Bluetooth.

Step 3

Open the Garmin Messenger app on your iPhone. At the bottom of the screen, tap Device.

Step 4

Tap Presets.

First message: After arriving at the trailhead or parking lot, and after warm-up, send Starting my trip.
Second message: At the summit, at the turnaround point of an out-and-back trail, during descent on a loop trail, or whenever appropriate (often after the group photo), send I'm checking in. Everything is okay.
Third message: After returning to the parking lot, send I'm ending my trip.

Step 5

After sending a message, the Message Check icon may keep spinning, which can make you wonder whether the message was sent successfully.

I recommend setting a 3-minute timer. When the timer goes off, open the Device menu again. The Message Check sequence should be complete, and you can turn off the inReach Mini 2.
