1. August 17: Lake Magog & Sunburst Peak Route (Near-Fatal Risk)
Route Track: Lake Magog & Sunburst Peak Trail
This route was selected by me and published on the main event page. Prior to the trip, I asked Yuki if I was capable of ascending Sunburst Peak. Encouraged by her response, I searched for the route online and downloaded the GPX track without thoroughly reviewing its technical description. Unknowingly, the file I distributed was a technical Mountaineering Route rather than the standard Sunburst Peak Scramble Route. Unfortunately, no participants independently cross-checked or verified the terrain classification before embarking on the trail.
- Lucy & Brother 3: Setting out two hours ahead of the main group, Brother 3 relied on his extensive alpine experience to recognize the danger early. He made the critical decision to pivot to the non-technical route indicated by the dashed line on AllTrails.
- Maggie & Jeffery: Following the published GPX track, they navigated severe exposure and completed roughly 80% of the climb before encountering impassable vertical cliff walls. Trapped on exposed terrain, they utilized two-way radios to establish contact with Brother 3 and Lucy, who were already descending. Guided by Brother 3 over radio comms, Maggie and Jeffery successfully completed a high-stakes horizontal traverse across technical terrain to rejoin the standard scrambling path and descend safely.
Key Takeaway & Safety Rule: You should never rely solely on an event leader for your personal safety in the backcountry. Every team member must conduct independent route research, carry an active two-way radio (refer to our Hiking Checklist), and recognize the importance of turning back early before committing to hazardous terrain.
2. August 18: Wonder Peak Ascent & Emergency Escalation
Routes: Wonder Pass Viewpoint | Wonder Peak Trail
Lucy, Joy, and Brother 3 departed one hour ahead of the main party. By 10:30 AM, the remaining 15 group members reached the trail junction. Five members opted for the Wonder Pass Viewpoint trail, while ten chose to tackle Wonder Peak.
- During my ascent, I met Joy as she was descending early near the summit, where we paused for a quick selfie.

- Reaching the summit fourth, I celebrated with group photos alongside Lucy, Brother 3, and Maggie.

- During the descent, I caught up with Lucy, Brother 3, and Maggie after they drifted onto a lower off-trail line, helping guide them back up to the primary ridge route.
- Further down, we crossed paths with Jeffery ascending solo, followed by George and Clark climbing higher up in the distance.
- At 1:30 PM, Lodge staff informed us that Jeffery Ding had initiated a 911 emergency call. After reaching the ridge alone and losing visual contact with George and Clark, Jeffery had re-ascended toward the summit to locate them before initiating emergency communications. Fortunately, Jeffery returned safely to the lodge shortly thereafter, unharmed but understandably shaken.
- George and Clark returned later that evening, clarifying that they had chosen to complete an unannounced full loop instead of an out-and-back route in an attempt to catch up with the group.
