Mastering the Pull-Up: Detailed Progression, Technical Breakdown, and Chiropractic Support
Overview
On September 26, 2026, I published my initial blog post reflecting on my journey from doing 1 pull-up to 10 (read pull_ups_milestone.html). Looking back, that post skipped over many crucial training details! This blog post is dedicated to filling in those exact technical steps and training milestones.
On October 26, 2025, during a Vancouver Runaholics training session in Richmond, BC, I met Xiang Yu. After our run, the team shared lunch at a local Chinese restaurant where Xiang and I sat at the same table. We had a deep conversation about running endurance and pull-up technique. Coach Qi mentioned that Xiang had the potential to break 3 hours in a full marathon.
Although I am taller, Xiang is younger with a lean, ideal runner's physique. He demonstrated effortless mastery by executing 20 full pull-ups and generously shared key technical drills with me.

Xiang Yu's Pull-Up Technical Breakdown Drills
Xiang taught me to deconstruct the pull-up movement into targeted, manageable components:
Builds foundational grip strength and decompresses the spine.

Cue 2: Imagine driving elbows into rear pockets.
Hypertrophy & Back Auxiliary Exercises
To support pull-up progression, targeted back hypertrophy work is essential:
Targets upper back, rhomboids, and rear deltoids.

I began chiropractic care with Dr. Ali Amiri at Coquitlam Family Chiropractic in Q1 2022. Regular adjustments dramatically improved my spinal spinal alignment and overall back health.
Key Noticeable Improvements:
-
Improved Autonomic & Metabolic Circulation: My underarms began sweating much more readily during physical exertion.
- During two trips to Revelstoke, BC in Summer 2022, trail mosquitoes started flocking to me instead of my wife! (She is Type A blood, I am Type O - increased sweat and metabolic activity shifted their focus to me).
- On the positive side, I am no longer sensitive or fearful of cold winter weather!
- Summiting Golden Ears Peak (Sept 22, 2022): After nearly 15 years of being unable to hike rigorous mountain routes due to back discomfort, I successfully summited Golden Ears! (Read more about my recovery in belly-in-method.html).
Clinic Pull-Up Milestone: 11 Reps at 202+ lbs!
Starting in March 2026, Dr. Ali noticed my pull-up training and invited me to test myself on the pull-up bar inside his clinic during my routine 6-week visits. I started at 5 reps. Dr. Ali continuously cheered me on.
On October 26, 2026, weighing over 202 lbs, I officially completed 11 full pull-ups inside his clinic!
