Reflection on 2025: A Journey of Transformation, Introspection, and Gratitude

2025 was an incredibly joyful and milestone year for me. Looking back, I went through a complete transformation—both in my appearance and my mindset. I became fitter, felt better, and grew less reactive. When others critique me, I now practice active listening and self-reflection instead of rushing to argue.

Going from a complete novice to a trusted gold-medal trip leader within our association, I could never have walked this path so confidently without the incredible mentors and friends who guided me. I am deeply grateful to so many, but this post is dedicated to thanking those who shared the trails with me last year. As someone who loves to learn and self-reflect, this piece is not just about expressing gratitude, but also about anchoring the hard-won safety lessons where things went well, but could have easily cost me a big price.

Trip Leader's Safety Advisory

In Vancouver, there are three prominent mountains (and similar alpine terrains) with long, unrelenting steep slopes. If you head out during winter or the shoulder season when the slopes are choked with snow and ice, a mandatory 3-piece kit is non-negotiable for survival:

  • Helmet — To protect against rockfalls and impacts during a fall.
  • Ice Axe — For ascent stability and performing a self-arrest if you slip.
  • Crampons — Full-grade mountaineering crampons for hard ice and deep snow, not simple microspikes.

First Time to Wedgemount Lake: Two Hard Safety Lessons

That day, I joined Zhang Hao from the Vancouver Outdoor Group for a trek to Wedgemount Lake. Being green and inexperienced, I made two critical mistakes:

First Lead with PNOA: Mount Harvey & Mentorship from Li Wan

This marked my very first trip leading for PNOA, guiding a group of 9 to Mount Harvey. Our veteran hiker, Li Wan (Old Wan), generously passed down his extensive leadership knowledge. Since I was planning to tackle Black Tusk, he specifically taught me the vital three-point contact technique, which proved indispensable when I eventually climbed the chimney section.

Victor

Mount Brunswick: Victor, the Unsung Hero at the Rear

When we tackled Mount Brunswick, I hadn't yet mastered the energy-saving rest step, and my physical stamina wasn't what it is today. Even though I was leading from the front, I was pushed to my limit. Victor stayed at the very back of the pack, patiently looking after me and anchoring the entire group.

Looking through the photos from that day, Victor is nowhere to be seen—simply because he spent the entire trip working the rear guard. Thank you, Victor, for being our silent anchor!

Brandywine Meadows Trail:

Brandywine Meadows Trail: A Heart-Stopping 10-Meter Slide

I joined Harvey's trip to Brandywine Meadows, which featured a notoriously steep slope heavily blanketed in snow. Lacking proper gear, I lost my footing and slid backward out of control for about 10 meters. In a flash of panic, I dug the heels of my high-top Scarpa backpacking boots hard into the snow crust, successfully forced a slide-slip stop. It was a terrifying wake-up call: never enter steep snow slopes without an ice axe and the knowledge of how to use it.

Black Tusk:

Black Tusk: Overcoming Fear with a Guiding Light

Staring up at the imposing, exposed chimney of Black Tusk, fear was visibly written in my eyes. Yuki stepped up, anchoring my nerves with her calm encouragement. She promised, "Just follow me, I will stay right in your line of sight." Watching her steady steps ahead helped me quiet the panic, conquer my fear of heights, and stand proudly on top.

Overlord Mountain:

Overlord Mountain: Hitting the Wall and a Lifeline Near the Summit

While climbing Overlord Mountain, a lack of heavy-mileage nutrition planning caught up to me; I hadn’t packed enough energy gels or fast carbs. With just 100 meters of elevation gain left before the summit, I hit the wall hard, leaning forward completely bonked, running strictly on pure willpower. On the grueling hike back down, Yuki noticed my exhaustion and handed me her own bread and energy gels. Yuki, you threw me a lifeline out in the wild once again.
